Shree Shantadurga temple
Shree Shantadurga temple is located at 33 kms from Panjim. It is located at Kavalem Village in Ponda taluka. It has the beautiful surroundings.It was constructed in the year 1738 by the grandson of Maratha warrior king Chattrapati Shivaji.
It has the idol of goddess shree Shantadurga Devi. This is the avatar of Shree Jagadamba Devi. She had come to make peace (Shanti) between Shree Vishnu and Shree Shiva. She eventually came to be known as Shree Shantadurga Devi.
Legends say that there was a fierce battle between Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. So Lord Brahma prayed to Goddess Parvati to intervene. she did it in the form of Shantadurga. She placed Vishnu on her right hand and Shiva on her left hand and settled the fight.
The deity of Shantadurga is shown as holding two serpents one in each hand representing Vishnu and Shiva.
Originally devi was located at Keloshi place from where she was shifted to Kavlem during the Portuguese rule.
