Shree Ramnath Temple
The temple is located in Ramnathim village of Ponda taluka. The chief deity of the temple is Ramnatha and hence the temple came to be known as Ramnathi. Ramnathi incorporates the system of Panchayasthan i.e. the temple houses 5 main deities namely – Shri Ramnath (chief Deity), Santeri, Kamakshi, Laxmi Narayan, Ganpati and Betal – Kalbhairav. This completes Ramnathi Panchayatna.
Originally Shree Ramnath deity was installed by Lord Rama at Rameshwar in 3000 years B.C. After killing Ravana, when Rama returned from Lanka along with Sita, he decided to pray to Lord Shiva in order to absolve him of killing a Brahmin (Ravana). Hence a Shivlinga was installed and Rama prayed to it. This came to be known as Ramnath.
Shree Ramnath temple was originally located at Loutolim in Salcette Goa. In 16th century, during the Portuguese rule in Goa, Shree Ramnath idol was shifted to Ramnathim in order to prevent its damage by the Portuguese authorities.
